Montgomery, AL (August 27, 2026) – The second medical cannabis dispensary in Alabama will open in Talladega on Friday, August 28. The Talladega dispensary is also the second location for CCS of Alabama, LLC (dba Callie’s Apothecary), which has served over 800 patients and made nearly 1300 sales transactions since opening its Montgomery location in early June. Callie’s Apothecary plans to open its Bessemer location in September.

“The opening of medical cannabis dispensaries is a milestone for Alabama’s medical cannabis program,” said Sam Blakemore, chairman of the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission. “Having more dispensary locations throughout the state is vital for patient access and affordability.”

In addition to Callie’s Apothecary, GP6 Wellness, LLC (dba BamaBloom) expects to open dispensaries in Athens and Birmingham in September, and it has plans underway for its third dispensary in Etowah County. The third dispensary license issued by AMCC is held by RJK Holdings AL, LLC, which is planning to open dispensaries in Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne.

“Alabama law tightly regulates businesses in the medical cannabis industry and rightfully so,” said AMCC Director John McMillan. “Because of this, opening a dispensary is not an overnight process, but we appreciate the diligence of each of the licensees in moving forward with their plans to open first-class dispensaries across the state.”

Alabama’s medical cannabis law limits AMCC to issuing four dispensary licenses, with each licensee permitted to operate three dispensaries. The law also permits AMCC to issue five integrated facility licenses, with each licensee permitted to operate five dispensaries. The fourth dispensary license and all integrated facility licenses are currently subject to administrative and legal challenges, which have stalled 28 dispensary locations.

“A fully implemented program will mean a minimum of 37 dispensaries across Alabama,” explained McMillan. “We look forward to the resolution of ongoing licensing disputes to clear the way for dispensaries to open and where patient care will be the priority.”
